Distribution Power Cable Networks

After-laying, maintenance and diagnostic testing of medium voltage cable circuits up to 66 kV with damped AC (DAC) test voltage have been demonstrated that PD-monitored voltage withstand testing using DAC voltage is a very effective method to detect most insulation weak-spots and to provide to distribution power network asset managers valuable information about the actual cable condition.

Transmission Power Cable Networks

On-site after-laying test has the goal to verify the quality of the complete transmission power cable system up to 275 kV. It is a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) performed after the complete cable system installation, including all cable parts, terminations and all types of joints, before the cable system is put into normal service operation.

The after-laying test is performed with a PD-monitored withstand testing. This consists of a high voltage test with a predetermined magnitude and duration, and the monitoring of partial discharges to determine the overall cable condition.

Fault Localisation

Moreover, the use of DAC testing, in case of high-Ω cable breakdowns, DAC testing can be used for less destructive fault localization due to the possibility of PD localization over the complete cable system length. This, in turn, might minimalize the repair time effort for breakdown site localisation and possible repair costs.
